A woman called, addressing me by name and saying it was Indiana police calling. The woman said they were taking donations so they could take abused and needy children Xmas shopping this year. She was very friendly until she asked if they could count on me this year and I told her, "I'm sorry, I can't right now." I was about to explain that I'm unemployed, but she immediately hung up.
My caller ID said only "Indiana Call." It is never a good idea to donate over the telephone. These people are scammers. Legitimate charities send solicitations by mail and are traceable to a registered organization. If the caller doesn't give you the name of an organization that is evaluated on a trusted website such as Charity Watch, it is likely not a legitimate charity. Never give your credit/debit card number over the telephone unless you have initiated the call yourself and are certain who you are talking to.
